Clamp meter calibration in Perth

AC and DC current clamps checked against a traceable current source to 11 A, plus the voltage, resistance and frequency functions on the meter.

A clamp meter reads current without breaking the circuit, which makes it the default tool for load surveys and motor checks — and makes its accuracy hard to sanity-check in the field. AmpTech calibrates AC and DC clamp meters in our Caversham lab, driving known currents through the jaw from a traceable reference and checking the meter's other functions at the same time.

Types of clamp meters we calibrate

  • AC current clamp meters
  • AC/DC (Hall effect) clamp meters
  • Leakage current clamps
  • Flexible (Rogowski) current probes
  • Clamp attachments for multimeters

What the calibration covers

  • AC current at points up to 11 A, the ceiling our calibrator sources directly
  • DC current on Hall-effect clamps, including zero offset after the jaw is opened and closed
  • Voltage and resistance functions where the meter provides them
  • Frequency and inrush functions where fitted
  • Jaw closure and alignment — a jaw that does not close cleanly reads low

Typical interval

12 months

How often should a clamp meter be calibrated?

Twelve months is standard. Clamps used for energy audits or for readings that feed into invoicing or reports are often kept on a tighter interval because the current reading is the product.

Why clamp meters drift

The magnetic core in the jaw is the sensitive part. Dropping the meter, dirt between the jaw faces, or a jaw that has been sprung slightly open all reduce the reading. Hall-effect DC clamps also carry a zero offset that wanders with temperature and needs to be checked, not just zeroed in the field.

What your certificate records

  • As-found and as-left current readings at each test point and range
  • Results for voltage, resistance and any other functions tested
  • Reference current source and other standards used
  • Environmental conditions at the time of calibration

References we work to

  • Manufacturer's published accuracy specification for the model
  • ISO 9001 clause 7.1.5 — monitoring and measuring resources

Calibrated in our Caversham lab

Clamp meter calibration is bench work, so it happens in our lab rather than at your premises. Drop instruments in, bookpickup & drop-off across Perth, or freight them from regional WA. Every certificate is issued under our ISO 9001 certified quality management system and is traceable to national standards.

FAQ

Clamp meter calibration FAQs

Do you calibrate the current clamp or just the meter functions?
Both. The current clamp is calibrated by passing known currents through the jaw from a traceable source, and the voltage, resistance and other functions are checked separately.
How much current can you actually apply through the jaw?
Up to 11 A, which is what our calibrator sources directly. That covers the low current ranges most clamps are read on day to day, and your certificate states exactly which points were tested. If you need the 200 A or 600 A ranges verified, tell us when you enquire — we will say so plainly rather than imply a range we did not test.
Can you calibrate a flexible current probe?
Yes, flexible Rogowski-style probes are calibrated across their current ranges in the same way as a rigid jaw — send the probe with its display unit or host meter so the pair is calibrated together.
My clamp meter reads slightly high on one range — is that normal?
Every range has a tolerance, and a small consistent error inside that tolerance is normal. The certificate tells you exactly how much, so you can decide whether it matters for the measurements you make with it.
