Process calibrator calibration in Perth

Loop and multifunction process calibrators checked on both source and measure — mA, volts, thermocouple and RTD simulation — so the instrument you calibrate with is itself in calibration.

A process calibrator is the reference your instrument technicians carry to the plant, so an error in it is copied into every transmitter and loop they check. AmpTech calibrates loop and multifunction process calibrators in our Caversham lab on both their source and measure functions, against references traceable to national standards.

Types of process and loop calibrators we calibrate

  • Loop calibrators (4–20 mA source, simulate and measure)
  • Multifunction process calibrators
  • Thermocouple and RTD simulators
  • Voltage and frequency sources

What the calibration covers

  • mA source and measure at points across the 4–20 mA span and beyond
  • Voltage source and measure on each range
  • Thermocouple simulation and measurement for each type the instrument supports, including cold-junction compensation
  • RTD simulation and measurement at resistance values across the range
  • Frequency and pulse functions where fitted
  • Loop power supply output where the instrument provides it

Typical interval

12 months

How often should a process calibrator be calibrated?

Twelve months is standard for process calibrators. Because every reading the instrument gives becomes someone else's calibration record, plant-instrumentation teams tend to hold this interval firmly rather than extend it.

Why process and loop calibrators drift

Process calibrators are built around a precision voltage reference and shunt resistors that drift slowly with age and temperature. Cold-junction compensation for thermocouple functions is also sensitive to how the instrument has been stored and handled. Small errors here matter more than in a general-purpose meter because they are multiplied across every loop the calibrator touches.

What your certificate records

  • As-found and as-left results for each source and measure function tested
  • Thermocouple and RTD simulation results by type and test point
  • Reference standards used, with their traceability
  • Environmental conditions at the time of calibration

References we work to

  • Manufacturer's published specification for the model
  • ISO 9001 clause 7.1.5 — monitoring and measuring resources
  • Your instrumentation procedures, where they set a tighter tolerance

Calibrated in our Caversham lab

Process calibrator calibration is bench work, so it happens in our lab rather than at your premises. Drop instruments in, bookpickup & drop-off across Perth, or freight them from regional WA. Every certificate is issued under our ISO 9001 certified quality management system and is traceable to national standards.

FAQ

Process calibrator calibration FAQs

Do you calibrate both the source and measure sides?
Yes. Source functions are measured against our reference meters, and measure functions are fed known values from our reference sources, so both halves of the instrument are covered on the certificate.
Which thermocouple types do you cover?
The common industrial types the instrument supports — typically K, J, T, E, N, R and S — are simulated and measured at points across the range. Tell us which types you actually use and we will make sure they are on the certificate.
Can you calibrate the transmitters we check with it too?
Our scope is the test and measurement instrument — the calibrator itself, plus the multimeters, thermometers and other instruments in your kit. Plant transmitters in situ are outside what we do; a calibrated process calibrator is what lets your own technicians do that work with confidence.
