Micrometer calibration in Perth

External, internal and depth micrometers checked against traceable gauge blocks at points across the range, including zero and full span.

A micrometer is the instrument a machinist reaches for when the tolerance is tight, so its calibration record is the one an auditor is most likely to ask about. AmpTech calibrates external, internal and depth micrometers in our Caversham lab against traceable gauge blocks, checking readings at points across the full range.

Types of micrometers we calibrate

  • External micrometers (0–25 mm upward, in 25 mm steps)
  • Digital micrometers
  • Depth micrometers
  • Blade, point and specialised anvil micrometers

What the calibration covers

  • Reading against gauge blocks at points across the range, chosen to exercise the full rotation of the thimble
  • Zero setting, and the setting standard supplied with larger micrometers
  • Anvil and spindle face condition and contact
  • Ratchet or friction thimble operation, which affects repeatability
  • Rod extensions on depth micrometers, each checked individually

How often should a micrometer be calibrated?

Twelve months is standard. Micrometers used for final inspection or on close-tolerance work are commonly kept on a 6-month interval, with a setting-standard check between calibrations.

Why micrometers drift

Micrometers are robust but not immune: worn or damaged measuring faces, a bent frame from a drop, and a spindle thread that has picked up grit all introduce errors. Because a micrometer resolves to a hundredth of a millimetre or better, errors that a caliper would never reveal are exactly what matter here.

What your certificate records

  • As-found and as-left readings at each gauge-block length checked
  • Zero and setting-standard results
  • Measuring-face condition observations
  • Gauge blocks and reference standards used, with traceability

References we work to

  • Manufacturer's published accuracy specification for the model and range
  • ISO 9001 clause 7.1.5 — monitoring and measuring resources

Calibrated in our Caversham lab

Micrometer calibration is bench work, so it happens in our lab rather than at your premises. Drop instruments in, bookpickup & drop-off across Perth, or freight them from regional WA. Every certificate is issued under our ISO 9001 certified quality management system and is traceable to national standards.

FAQ

Micrometer calibration FAQs

Should I send the setting standard with my micrometer?
Yes. The setting standard is checked and reported with the micrometer, so you know both halves of the pair are correct.
Do you calibrate micrometer sets?
Yes. Sets are calibrated as individual instruments, each with its own certificate, and returned together with a register covering the set.
Can you calibrate an internal three-point micrometer?
Not at present — three-point internal micrometers are set against calibrated ring gauges, which our lab does not yet hold. External and depth micrometers are calibrated against gauge blocks as normal.
