Micrometer calibration for manufacturing
Machine shops and fabricators across Perth rely on micrometers for the dimensions that decide whether a part ships. When a customer PPAP or first-article inspection references a micrometer reading, the calibration certificate for that micrometer is part of the evidence pack.
A micrometer is the instrument a machinist reaches for when the tolerance is tight, so its calibration record is the one an auditor is most likely to ask about. AmpTech calibrates external, internal and depth micrometers in our Caversham lab against traceable gauge blocks, checking readings at points across the full range.
Interval in manufacturing
12 months (6 months for final inspection)
ISO 9001; customer quality requirements
Setting the interval
Twelve months is standard. Micrometers used for final inspection or on close-tolerance work are commonly kept on a 6-month interval, with a setting-standard check between calibrations.
What the calibration covers
- Reading against gauge blocks at points across the range, chosen to exercise the full rotation of the thimble
- Zero setting, and the setting standard supplied with larger micrometers
- Anvil and spindle face condition and contact
- Ratchet or friction thimble operation, which affects repeatability
- Rod extensions on depth micrometers, each checked individually
What your certificate records
The certificate format manufacturing procurement and audit teams ask for: the equipment under test, its serial number, the reference instruments used, as-found and as-left readings, environmental conditions and a traceability statement, plus the micrometer-specific items below.
- As-found and as-left readings at each gauge-block length checked
- Zero and setting-standard results
- Measuring-face condition observations
- Gauge blocks and reference standards used, with traceability
Standards & frameworks in manufacturing
- ISO 9001 quality management system
- ISO 10012 (referenced) — measurement management
- AS/NZS 3760 for portable electrical equipment on plant
- Customer-specific PPAP / quality requirements
How manufacturing clients get micrometers to us
Calibration is performed in our Caversham lab — not on site. We collect from and deliver back to manufacturing workshops and offices across Perth, and instruments from regional sites come by freight or via your Perth base.
- Canning Vale and Bibra Lake manufacturing precincts
- Welshpool and Kewdale fabrication and assembly workshops
- Malaga light industrial and trade workshops
- Osborne Park commercial and QC laboratories
Working with manufacturing procurement
We work with quality and production teams to align calibration intervals with your control plan, supply certificates that map directly to your gauge register, and schedule recall reminders so nothing falls out of cal during a production run.
