Process calibrator calibration for mining

Processing plants run on 4–20 mA loops, and the instrument technicians who maintain them carry a process calibrator as their reference. If it is out, every loop check since its last calibration is in question — which is why plant instrumentation teams keep these on a strict recall.

A process calibrator is the reference your instrument technicians carry to the plant, so an error in it is copied into every transmitter and loop they check. AmpTech calibrates loop and multifunction process calibrators in our Caversham lab on both their source and measure functions, against references traceable to national standards.

Setting the interval

Twelve months is standard for process calibrators. Because every reading the instrument gives becomes someone else's calibration record, plant-instrumentation teams tend to hold this interval firmly rather than extend it.

  • Thermocouple simulation and measurement for each type the instrument supports, including cold-junction compensation

What your certificate records

The certificate format mining procurement and audit teams ask for: the equipment under test, its serial number, the reference instruments used, as-found and as-left readings, environmental conditions and a traceability statement, plus the process calibrator-specific items below.

We have several calibrators across different sites — can you stagger them?
Yes. Send them in a batch or one at a time — we log each unit separately with its own due date and remind you before each falls due, so you never have all of them off site at once.
Do you calibrate both the source and measure sides?
Yes. Source functions are measured against our reference meters, and measure functions are fed known values from our reference sources, so both halves of the instrument are covered on the certificate.
Which thermocouple types do you cover?
The common industrial types the instrument supports — typically K, J, T, E, N, R and S — are simulated and measured at points across the range. Tell us which types you actually use and we will make sure they are on the certificate.
