Thermocouple calibration in Perth

Thermocouple and RTD sensors, with or without their indicators, checked against a reference thermometer at points across the working range.

Thermocouples and RTDs are the sensors behind process control, ovens and test rigs, and their errors are invisible until something is checked against a reference. AmpTech calibrates thermocouple and RTD sensors in our Caversham lab against a reference thermometer traceable to national standards, either as a sensor alone or as a sensor-and-indicator system.

Types of thermocouples and RTDs we calibrate

  • Type K, J, T, N and other base-metal thermocouples
  • Pt100 and Pt1000 RTDs
  • Thermocouple and RTD probes with handheld indicators
  • Sensor-and-indicator loops calibrated as a system

What the calibration covers

  • Sensor output against a reference thermometer at points between −25 °C and +140 °C
  • System calibration — sensor plus indicator read together, where you send both
  • Indicator accuracy alone, using simulated inputs, where the sensor is fixed in plant
  • Lead and connector condition, which affects thermocouple readings

Typical interval

12 months

How often should a thermocouple & rtd be calibrated?

Twelve months is standard. Thermocouples that run hot age quickly and are often treated as consumables on a shorter interval; RTDs are more stable but suffer from lead and connection problems.

Why thermocouples and RTDs drift

Thermocouples change composition with time at temperature, and any damage or contamination along the wire changes the output. RTDs drift less but are sensitive to lead resistance and moisture. Calibrating the sensor with its indicator catches errors in both, and in the connections between them.

What your certificate records

  • As-found and as-left readings at each temperature point
  • Whether calibrated as a sensor alone or as a sensor-and-indicator system
  • Reference thermometer and equipment used, with traceability
  • Environmental conditions at the time of calibration

References we work to

  • Tolerance class for the thermocouple type or RTD class, or your process tolerance
  • ISO 9001 clause 7.1.5 — monitoring and measuring resources

Calibrated in our Caversham lab

Thermocouple & RTD calibration is bench work, so it happens in our lab rather than at your premises. Drop instruments in, bookpickup & drop-off across Perth, or freight them from regional WA. Every certificate is issued under our ISO 9001 certified quality management system and is traceable to national standards.

FAQ

Thermocouple calibration FAQs

Should I send the indicator with the thermocouple?
If you use them together, yes — calibrating them as a system checks the whole measurement chain. If the sensor is fixed in plant, we can calibrate the indicator alone using simulated inputs.
What temperature range can you cover?
Our dry-well runs from −25 °C to +140 °C, so sensors used within that band are calibrated against the reference thermometer at points you nominate. Thermocouples that run hotter in service can still have their indicator checked by simulation, which has no such limit — we will explain which parts of the chain the certificate covers.
Do you calibrate RTDs as well as thermocouples?
Yes. Pt100 and similar RTDs are calibrated against the reference thermometer at points across their range, alone or with their indicator.
